Tigbauan, was once an enco-
mienda" of the King of Spain
given to Esteban Rodriguez De
Figueroa. It derived its name
from the tall grasses known in
vernacular as :tigbao" which
abounded so much that the
place was identified as "katig-
bauan" or field of reeds. This
was later shortened to "Tigba-
uan". The jesuit historian Fa-
ther Pedro Chirino called this
place "Campo de Suaraga". It
was here that Father Chirino
established the first Jesuit mi-
nistry in the Philippines. Don
Manuel Lacumencial "Intenden-
te de Cebu", who lived in Tigba-
uan in 1851 changed the family
names of the townspeople to
start with letter "T" names which
derived from the towns and pla-
ces in Spain or from the Spanish
family names. On July 4, 1617,
the Agustinians officially admi-
nistered the parish of Tigbauan
up to 1892. The town church
built in 1867 through forced la-
bor was the handiwork of Father
Florencio Martin. The church was
heavily damaged during World
War II. Recurring earthquakes in
1947 added more piles to the
ruins. Cementing of roads and
public places started under the
leadership of Capitan Serapio
Teruel in 1870.
